The Arts & Cultural Commission and the City of Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department will host a citywide three-day cultural event at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.
Hosted along the beautiful scenic bay at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Festival includes something for everyone. The 2010 Corpus Christi Festival of the Arts will feature artistic and cultural individuals that provide an exciting array of talent. Patrons enjoy presentations of contemporary and folk dance, poetry, independent film/cinema, ballet, theatre, musical entertainment, stunning visual art exhibits, sand sculpturing and an art-full KidZone. Everyone will enjoy the Italian Street Painting created by internationally recognized artists. The event includes artistic organizations, in addition to on site food vendors, artisans, craftsmen, workshops, and lecture demonstrations.
“Chalk it up for the Arts,” the theme for the 2010 Festival of the Arts. Returning guest artists, Julie Kirk and Melanie Stimmell, who are internationally recognized, will share their expertise and fascination with the ephemeral technique of street painting, creating a 15ft x 15ft street painting in the courtyard of the Art Center over the course of the festival days. Educational street painting workshops will take place all day Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday morning. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe a 30-minute Powerpoint presentation, interact with an Italian Street Painting artist, create their own artwork, and observe Italian Street Painting in the making. Space is limited and registration is required. Saturday workshop is limited to High School, College and University students and Adults. Workshops are free but reservations required by email contact/confirmation to info@ccfestivalarts.org .
The Opening Ceremony & Guest Artists Reception will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 from 5:30pm–8pm. Come, meet and welcome all featured artists, view the art in the galleries, enjoy live music and refreshments. Event is FREE and open to the public. The activities on March 26–27 will feature dance, music, visual art, theater and cinema—all in one location over the course of one fantastic weekend so tourist or resident, young and old can experience and enjoy the arts. With several years of bringing the community together to celebrate the arts in all its various forms, the Arts & Cultural Commission’s Festival of the Arts is a community event that provides cultural activities that are free to the public and sponsored in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts.

More About the
Italian Street Painting Artists
Julie Kirk has been commissioned internationally to complete a number of murals, sculptures, graphic works and paintings for individuals and organizations including the 2004 Rose Bowl, Disney Entertainment, Howard Hughes Corporation, Lexus Corporation. Ms. Kirk currently participates and is recognized internationally in street painting events. In 2003, she was awarded 1st Place, Semplici Division in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. Currently, she is a faculty member at California State University.
Melanie Stimmel is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design and is the former technical director for Comedy Central’s popular animated series, South Park. Ms. Stimmel is from the Los Angeles area and has participated in street painting festivals throughout the US and abroad. She won first place in her entered categories of “Semplici” and “Qualificato” at the International Street Painting Competition in 2002 and 2003.

The City of Corpus Christi Arts & Cultural Commission issues an open call to artists who work is currently in the Corpus Christi Permanent Art Collection of the Corpus Christi Libraries. For the presentation and demonstration to be conducted by the artist(s) for a children’s workshop on Friday, March 26, 2010 during the Festival on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 & 28, 2010. Audience interaction, in terms of questions and answers, will be required. Application Deadline: All artist’s packets and/or materials pertaining to the proposal must be mailed by February 2, 2010 (postmark date); or hand-delivered by 5pm on February 4, 2010 (hand-stamped).
